2024-10 Launch of the CHORAL project

Launch of the CHORAL projectUNITA universities to host 42 doctoral students in the field of cultural heritage

On 17 October 2024, the Université de Pau et des Pays de l'Adour (UPPA) officially launched the CHORAL (Cultural Heritage Outreach in RomAnce Languages) project, a programme co-funded by the European Union as part of the Horizon Europe initiative and Marie Skłodowska Curie. This project, coordinated by UPPA, is closely linked to the ‘Cultural Heritage’ hub of the UNITA alliance.

The aim of the CHORAL project is to train high-level researchers and promote interdisciplinary and international research on themes related to cultural heritage. All the doctoral students selected will be co-tutored by two universities in the alliance. They will benefit from tailor-made training, dedicated events and international mobility. The programme also aims to strengthen collaboration between researchers across Europe.

The first 14 PhD students were introduced at the event, giving them the opportunity to present their work. The range of thesis topics is vast: from the preservation of intangible heritage to the study of historic architecture.

In addition to UPPA, six other universities in the UNITA alliance recruit doctoral students and were present at the launch:

  • Université Savoie Mont Blanc (France)
  • University of Turin (Italy)
  • University of Zaragoza (Spain)
  • University of Brescia (Italy)
  • Public University of Navarre (Spain)
  • Transilvania University of Brașov (Romania)

The next call for applications will open in November 2024, offering 14 new scholarships for PhDs starting in autumn 2025. This launch marks an important step in the commitment of UPPA and the UNITA alliance to support research and the preservation of cultural heritage.
